Osawatomie is a city located in eastern Kansas. The city a population of about 4,300 people in 2016 according to the United States Census Bureau. It is situated in Miami County and is located about 50 miles south of Kansas City, Missouri.
Osawatomie is proud of being the only town in the United States to bear its name. The name Osawatomie was formed by combining the names of two separate Indian tribes, the Osage and the Pottawatomie. Two rivers bordering the city were named after the two Indian tribes as well. Osawatomie is also proud of being the city where John Brown made his great stand against slavery. The hill where John Brown met resistance in 1856 is now John Brown Memorial Park. The park was dedicated by Theodore Roosevelt in 1910. Osawatomie is also home to the Osawatomie Railroad Museum, Asylum Bridge, the Osawatomie History Museum, and the Mills House. Despite the small size of Osawatomie, its history is rich and many attractions are located within its city limits.
